ABSTRACT
This study discusses Tsukuru’s personality development on Haruki Murakami’s novel entitled Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. This novel tells about the life changes of Tsukuru Tazaki. Tsukuru is the main characters in the novel. The writer chooses to analyze Tsukuru’s personality development because his personality develops after he meets Sara Kimoto. Sara is the significant person who motivates Tsukuru to change his personality.
This study has two objectives. The first one is to identify the development of the main character’s personality. The second one is to identify the importance of another character towards the main character’s personality development. The method of this study is a library research. The writer uses Haruki Murakami’s novel entitled Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage as the primary data. While as the secondary data, the writer uses several books about literature theories, psychological theories and the internet sources. The writer uses psychological approach because it is used to analyze the personality development of Tsukuru Tazaki.
The writer finds that Tsukuru is characterized as reserved, lacking self-confidence and pessimistic before he meets Sara Kimoto. Sara has a great contribution in Tsukuru’s personality development. Because after Tsukuru meets Sara, his personality develops into an expressive, confident and optimistic person. Sara, as the significant person, changes Tsukuru’s personality by motivating him to solve his problems. In the end, she makes Tsukuru’s personality become better, undergoes a slow but qualitative development.
